The Philippine Army now welcomes men and women at least 5 feet or 1.52 meters tall. Formerly the minimum height was 5 feet, 4 inches for men and 5 feet, 2 inches for women.
The Philippines military has lowered its height requirement for recruits to attract shorter people who may have the technical skills it requires of soldiers, an officer said.
Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr. on Sunday said the revised height standards have been approved for implementation in all the service commands.
“We have seen it many times. Applicants who are very qualified are turned away because they did not meet the height requirement. They had better skills than those who were taller,” Brawner said.
Brawner said the former height requirements might have been related to an individual's carrying capacity. Soldiers carried heavy packs with armaments, food and shelter requirements in infantry missions.
Besides the minimum height, soldier-applicants must be at least 18 years but not more than 23 years old by the start of training on April 1, 2009. They should be single and high school graduates with some vocational skills.
