Manny Pacquiao smart fighter capturing the six world titles

The conventional wisdom was Manny 'pacman' Pacquiao had achieved the pinnacle of his storybook success after capturing the six world titles in different divisions the WBC flyweight, IBF superbantamweight, linear featherweight, WBC superfeatherweight, WBC lightweight and IBO lightwelterweight crowns to join only four others in history with six championships in as many divisions.

But Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz said the other day the sentiment now is he is still to reach his peak as a fighter.

“The scary part is Manny has not yet peaked,” said Koncz. “You noticed that in his past fights, he fought with reckless abandon. Now, he’s a lot more calculating. He’s become methodical and a thinking fighter. He counterpunches, defends and moves around to create openings.”

Koncz said building a legacy is important for Pacquiao but admitted the fighter is consumed with the thought of someday being introduced in the ring as “the reigning champion of the world, Congressman Manny Pacquiao.”

“At the moment, I think that’s his dream,” said Koncz. “It has nothing to do with personal ambition. Manny just believes as Congressman, he can do a lot more for his countrymen.”

Koncz said trainer Freddie Roach deserves credit for molding Pacquiao into what he is now but noted it’s the fighter, not the trainer, who wins fights.

“Freddie has done a great job with Manny but Freddie didn’t make Manny as much as Manny made Freddie,” continued Koncz. “Manny would’ve probably gotten to where he is now, as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, with an 80 to 85 percent probability without Freddie. Of course, Freddie has played an important role in making it happen.”

Koncz said strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza has also played a crucial role in developing Pacquiao into a complete fighting machine.

“When Manny was training for Oscar (de la Hoya), Alex had to modify some of his programs because they weren’t working,” recalled Koncz. “He initially used plyometric exercises not suitable for fighters like doing jumping jacks with a 75-pound medicine ball. For a while, Manny couldn’t sleep because he was so hyped up with an overdose of vitamins. Manny’s team talked it over with Alex. Manny’s the boss and Alex came up with a modified program. I thought Alex did a fine job working Manny’s body into tip-top condition for (Ricky) Hatton.”

Both Arum and Roach predicted greater things to come for Pacquiao.

“I really knew that the reason Pacquiao beat De la Hoya is that Oscar couldn’t deal with the speed and explosive power,” said Arum, quoted by Claude Abrams in the100-year-old British weekly trade paper Boxing News (May 8, 2009). “It had nothing to do with Oscar being shot. But what I am watching in Pacquiao is astounding. Usually, when a fighter reaches the top, he can be good for a number of years but there’s no improvement. Pacquiao, though, gets better with every fight. His defense and reflexes are tremendous.”

Roach declined to take credit for Pacquiao’s ascendancy.

“Pacquiao’s a smart fighter,” he said. “Now he is complete. I didn’t create a monster. The monster has always been there. He’s a much better fighter than when he lost to Erik Morales. It all suddenly clicked with him and he wants to get better.”

Roach, a 49-year-old bachelor who was once a pro fighter and learned the ropes from master trainer Eddie Futch, has become almost as legendary as Pacquiao.

“Roach’s greatest achievement, of course, has been his masterful body of work in training and tutoring Manny Pacquiao,” wrote Graham Houston in Boxing Monthly magazine (March 2009). “In his eight years with Pacquiao, Roach has molded the Filipino southpaw into a superstar fighting machine who is widely considered to be the world’s best fighter.”

Abrams took notice of Pacquiao’s emergence and said, “(his career) continues to flourish with alarming – for his possible future opponents – momentum and impact.”

Among those in the queue for the chance to face Pacquiao are WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Edwin Valero, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

How Kris Allen rose to the top 2 'Idol' finalist

Not much has changed about Kris Allen since his mostly forgettable "American Idol" audition. Well, except for the winning-it-all part.

When the 23-year-old college student from Conway, Aransas., first auditioned with Leon Russell's "A Song for You" in Louisville, Kentucky, he seemed nothing more than a boy-next-door "Idol" hopeful, lacking the instant juggernaut feel of showy 27-year-old runner-up Adam Lambert or even plucky 17-year-old spark plug Allison Iraheta.

A newsboy cap pulled down around his eyes, Allen was asked back then by the judges if he was the best singer.

"You know, there's probably people who are better than me," was his response, a humility that Simon Cowell said he found off-putting.

"Idol" producers must have agreed. Back in February, viewers had seen less of Allen out of all the crooners that moved forward in the competition. During Hollywood Week, neither of Allen's solos were aired, just his "I Want You Back" group performance. In fact, more footage from his original audition was aired during Wednesday's eighth season finale than in any previous episodes.

Once selected as a finalist, Allen got off to a rocky start after his first performance. The judges were decidedly mixed over his rendition of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," yet his charming nice-guy demeanor quickly emerged when it was revealed that the longtime Jackson fan had been helping the other singers — his competitors of all people! — tackle their takes on the King of Pop.

Allen himself seemed the most surprised about his shocking win by a margin of votes that, unlike last season's landslide victory by David Cook over David Archuleta, was not publicly declared by host Ryan Seacrest.

"I'm exhausted, and I'm shocked," Allen said backstage after winning the title. "I'm really shocked."

In the beginning, the judges simply seemed, if not in love, then "in like" with Allen — not heaping the same amounts of love on him as Lambert until later in the season.

The panel's initial feedback bordered on superficial. Paula Abdul once gushed he was "adorable/sexy" while Cowell teased the smiley newlywed for introducing his wife so early in the competition, at risk of scaring of female fans.

He always seemed to take their remarks in stride, content to forge ahead with his earnest singer-songwriter vibe no matter the outcome, never telegraphing a drive to best his fellow contestants.

Instead, Allen stuck to focusing on his guitar and piano on the "Idol" stage, impressing the judges with his folksy, heartfelt interpretations of such songs as "Ain't No Sunshine," "She Works Hard for the Money" and "Falling Slowly" from the indie musical "Once." He hit a crescendo last week when he transformed Kanye West's robotic tune "Heartless" into a soulful, acoustic ditty.

"I had written you out of the competition, but that has changed after that performance," Cowell boasted afterward.

However, it was runner-up Lambert who always received the most praise _ by both judges and screaming fans _ right until Tuesday's final performance. All the while, Allen was apparently neck-and-neck with Lambert when it came to viewer votes: The only time either was in the dreaded bottom-three was after their Rat Pack-themed performances.

Last week, only one million viewer votes separated them — a tiny margin considering that nearly 100 million votes were cast for the finale.

"I knew it was going to be a close race," Lambert said backstage. "I think Kris is incredibly talented, and he's a good person."

Though never referenced on the show, Allen's religious background may have also played a role. Allen has worked as a worship leader at his hometown church, traveling on mission trips around the globe. His pastor, Brandon Shatswell, said Allen told him that his first time on the "Idol" stage reminded him of only one thing: going to church.

Cannes Best director is filmmaker Brillante “Dante” Mendoza

Brillante “Dante” Mendoza was proclaimed best director in this year's 62nd Cannes Film Festival in France for his work "Kinatay" (Butchered), besting the likes of acclaimed directors Ang Lee, Pedro Almodovar, Jane Campion and Quentin Tarantino.

Some critics called the film "unwatchable" but others admitted that while they cringed at the film's blunt realism on violence, they could not look away.

A few days before the start of the premier festival, Mendoza wrote in an e-mail: “Ako lang ang walang pangalan.”

Mendoza bared in the earlier interview that just days before Cannes was set to open, he was still finishing the post-production work on “Kinatay” in Paris.

He shared his frenzied, last-minute adventure to finish “Kinatay.”

“I’m still in Paris, trying to finish my post production for the film. I’m with Mike Idioma, my sound designer, and my daughter Angelica,” Mendoza said.

“I had my final mix at the Malakoff Studios. Mike finished at 2:00 this morning, checking the sound with the guy from Dolby Digital. Tonight, I will check the audio together with the visuals at LTC laboratory Paris, which is processing and doing our prints. Tomorrow, I will check the subtitle at TITRA. The prints should be ready on Friday, May 15. Then we will hand-carry the prints by train to Cannes, hopefully in time for the press and official screenings on that weekend,” he said.

Dante pulled a tremendous upset victory since, in addition to Tarantino, Campion and Von Trier, he won over established filmmakers, including Michael Haneke, whose “The White Ribbbon” won the Palme d’Or, French master Alain Resnais, Oscar winner Ang Lee, Ken Loach, Gasper Noe and Johnnie To.

As the first Filipino to win the Best Director prize in Cannes, he joins the list of revered filmmakers who have won the coveted prize, including Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman, Francois Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Robert Bresson, Costa Gavras, Bernard Tavernier, Werner Herzog, Robert Altman, Joel Coen, Pedro Almodovar and Gus Van Sant.

Tikoy Aguiluz, Cinemanila International Film Festival director, reported in an e-mail that Tarantino himself liked “Kinatay.”

With Mendoza’s win, “Kinatay” is poised to gain further accolades in the international film scene.

"Kinatay" notably features corrupt cops hacking a prostitute to pieces with blunt kitchen knives.

Still determined to portray the social reality around him, Mendoza in "Kinatay" traces 24 hours in the day of a trainee policeman, happily beginning with his wedding in the morning to close with the young man's first outing at night with a band of corrupt colleagues.

Pavel Datsyuk's scoring has been way down during the Detroit Red Wings' run at another Stanley Cup. And now the star center and MVP finalist has a sore foot to deal with headed into Game 3 of the Western Conference finals.

Datsyuk missed practice Thursday before the Red Wings departed for Chicago, but his coach and teammates were hoping he'd be able to go against the Blackhawks on Friday night.

Datsyuk was struck by a puck during Detroit's 3-2 overtime win in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

"He took a rocket off the foot the other night. We'll go from there and see what happens," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

"He's day-to-day, simple. We'll see how his foot reacts."

Datsyuk, who had 97 points in the regular season, has scored one goal in 13 playoff games. He did have an assist in Game 2, giving him two in the series and six in the postseason.

But despite his scoring drought, the Red Wings lead the series 2-0 and are two victories away from returning to the Stanley Cup finals.

And Datsyuk is just one of the top Red Wings' players struggling to score. Marian Hossa, who had 40 goals in the regular season, has managed four in 13 playoffs games.

For the Game 2 of NBA Eastern Conference Finals 2009 Orlando Magic vs Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, May 22 8:30PM ET.

Behind a torrent of clutch 3-pointers -- the winner by Rashard Lewis with 14.7 seconds left -- and Dwight Howard's broad shoulders, the Magic muscled their way into Cleveland's noisy arena and rallied for a stunning 107-106 victory that may have altered the perception that the Cavaliers are the team to beat in the postseason.

This is no smoke-and-mirrors Magic act. Orlando is the real deal.

Howard set the tone by busting one of the shot clocks with a vicious dunk in the opening minutes, a we're-here-to-play moment that stunned a Cleveland crowd that later shuffled out of the building wondering what went wrong after seeing the Cavs lose on their home floor for just the third time in 46 games.

After Thursday's practice, Howard, standing near the same basket, was asked if he was done breaking things.

"No," he said, flashing a smile. "Not yet."

Orlando Magic put the first chink in the Cavs’ armor with a Game 1 upset. Is Cleveland now in must-win mode in Game 2?

Shane Mosley has called out Manny Pacquiao

Welterweight star Shane Mosley has called out pound for pound king Manny 'pacman' Pacquiao following the Filipino’s flawless two-round demolition job of Ricky 'the hitman' Hatton.

In an interview with ESPN’s Sports Center, Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) said he was impressed by Pacquiao’s performance, and is very much looking forward to sharing the ring with him soon.

"I thought Manny Pacquiao did an excellent job of putting together the right hook and that overhand left. I mean, that pretty much rocked Ricky Hatton every time it hit him," the gracious boxer from Pomona, California, said.

Asked if he deserves to get a shot at the current pound-for-pound king, Mosley pleaded his case.

“Why not [get a shot at Pacquiao]? I’m the welterweight champion of the world, the WBA super champion,” he stressed.

A former pound-for-pound king himself, Mosley reiterated his willingness to face top opposition. He stopped recognized welterweight champion Antonio Margarito in January to annex the WBA welterweight crown.

And his motivation in facing Pacquiao?

“I could be the first guy in history to win the pound-for-pound title twice. So let’s do it, let’s bring it on,” he said.

Is this the next Shane Mosley vs. Manny Pacquiao?

Lambert vs. Allen `American Idol' matchup

"American Idol" season finale part-1 flash back, the duel of the Davids, and Simon Cowell's confident proclamation.

"You came out here tonight to win, and what we have witnessed is a knockout," he told David Archuleta — who then proceeded to lose to David Cook.

Could Adam Lambert, cooed over by Cowell and the show's other judges Tuesday, as he has been all season, be another front-runner who falters? Could low-key Kris Allen swipe victory Wednesday from the bold theater actor who brought "guyliner" to family TV?

The answer may be found among Danny Gokey's supporters, according to Paula Abdul: Gokey's elimination after making it to the top three sent them in search of a new favorite.

"After the third one leaves, you wonder where do the votes go from that third contestant," the "Idol" judge said backstage after Tuesday's singing showdown.

Allen and Gokey seem more aligned than Lambert, in both style and substance. Allen, 23, of Conway, Ark., and Gokey, 29, of Milwaukee, shunned Lambert's elaborate staging and wardrobe when they performed, and both have traditional public images.

Allen is a married college student and has worked as a church worship leader. Gokey, a widower, is a church music director.

Lambert, 27, of Los Angeles, has largely kept his life under wraps, saying "I know who I am" when asked to dish. His talent, however, is there for all to see.

"That was the best I've ever heard you sing — ever!" Abdul exulted Tuesday.

Allen said Monday that he hoped the outcome isn't decided by "having the Christian vote."

"I hope it has to do with your talent and the performance that you give and the package that you have. It's not about religion and all that kind of stuff," he said.

Lambert concurred, saying, "It's about music. That's really important to keep in mind."

American Idol Season 8 Lambert-Allen wacky matchup finale

The final "American Idol" season 8 performance episode could be the weirdest concert ever televised.

In one corner, there's over-the-top Adam Lambert, the dominating presence who transformed Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" into a sitar-infused spectacle and tackled "Whole Lotta Love," the first-ever Led Zeppelin tune performed on Fox's "Idol." From the outset, he's been the ambiguous rocker next door, most comfortable — but not scary — in eyeliner and studded leather.

Then, there's Kris Allen, always at home in jeans with his guitar. The only fashion risk he's taken is that smidge of blue nail polish spotted on his thumb during a visit home to Conway, Ark. Allen garnered the most praise with his daring song choices, like singing "Falling Slowly" from indie musical "Once" and reinventing Kanye West's robotic "Heartless" as a wistful singer-songwriter joint.

"Kris' appeal is that he has an honesty and a sincerity when he performs, and that he has never tried to change who he is," said judge Kara DioGuardi. "He's like a steady ship in the night. He never changes his clothes because everybody else around him is. He never does a song in a way that is sort of overcooked because everyone else around him is."

The mixture of Allen's subtly and Lambert's showiness — only to be broken up with a performance by fourth-season champ Carrie Underwood — will likely make for a kookier-than-usual show Tuesday, especially considering that Allen's slot in the final two has been perceived as a come-from-behind victory for the 23-year-old college student.

"It's going to be a strange and interesting juxtaposition on Tuesday night," said Michael Slezak, who blogs about "Idol" for Entertainment Weekly magazine's Web site. "Kris and Adam are so different. Calling them apples and oranges doesn't go far enough. They're almost from different planets. It's like comparing a root vegetable to a sea creature."

If there's anything they have in common, it's consistency.

The only time the men were in the show's dreaded group of bottom-three vote-getters was after their Rat Pack-themed performances, yet Lambert has long been considered the front-runner. After host Ryan Seacrest revealed last week that only 1 million votes separated Allen from the 27-year-old theater actor, the competition could be closer than expected.

Top 10 Maxim Magazine 2009 Hot 100

Maxim’s 2009 Hot 100 - The Top 10 of most beautiful women photos.

Topping the list is House's Olivia Wilde, sliding in at spot number two is “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” babe Megan Fox. At spot number 93 a First Lady Michelle Obama makes the cut.

Top 10 of Maxim’s 2009 Hot 100.

1. Olivia Wilde
It probably helps that actress Olivia Wilde's characters - from the "The O.C." to "House" - allow her to channel her sexuality. But it's still a big surprise that this 25-year-old nabbed the title from another brunette beauty.

2. Megan Fox
"Transformers" babe Megan Fox. If there's any wonder why this actress is near the top

3. Bar Refaeli
Leonardo DiCaprio is one lucky man. His girlfriend, Israeli model Bar Rafaeli, not only donned the cover of Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition this year, but she comes in at an impressive No. 3 on Maxim's list this year.

4. Malin Akerman
Former model Malin Akerman's stock is rising after her turn in "Watchmen" earlier this year. She nabbed No. 4.

5. Mila Kunis
Actress Mila Kunis in not only beautiful but showed off her comic wit ("Saving Silverman") and action moves ("Max Payne") in her most recent big screen roles.

6. Eliza Dushku
Actress Eliza Dushku (No. 6.) came out swingin' in '09 with yet another fierce femme fatale role in "Dollhouse."

7. Adriana Lima
Too bad No. 7, Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima, is a taken woman now (she tied the knot on Valentine's Day)

8. Rihanna
Rihanna is hopefully enjoying her new single life. She made it to No. 8 on this year's list.

9. Jordana Brewster

Jordana Brewster, who's at the No. 9 spot, is one of the hottest New Yorkers on this year's list.

10. Jennifer Love Hewitt
Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt rounds out the top 10.
