More Pinoys having mobile phones

According to the latest Synovate Media Atlas, a study of the behavior of Filipino consumers aged 15-64, mobile phone ownership in the country had risen from 60 percent during the 2007-2008 survey period to 69 percent this year for non-Internet-capable handsets.

More Filipinos now own cellular phones, mostly the low-end and mid-tier varieties that do not have Internet connectivity, according to a market study.

For mobile phones with Internet connectivity, ownership also increased to 31 percent this year from 29 percent during the preceding survey period, the study revealed.

“This increase in ownership is likely due to the sustained release of newer and more affordable cell phone models,’’ Synovate global executive director for media Steve Garton said in a statement.

Ninety-five percent of those polled cited staying in touch as their primary reason for owning mobile phones.

The majority of those surveyed (79 percent) reinforced the country’s ``texting capital of the world’’ title by saying that short messaging service, or text messaging, was their preferred medium of communication on their wireless handsets.

Other popular usage of the mobile phones included playing games (50 percent), taking pictures (40 percent), and listening to music (29 percent).

The Filipinos’ appetite for new information as well as the popularity of social networking sites in the country also helped fuel an increase in mobile phone ownership.

Many news sites, including Inquirer.net, are capable of pushing content to mobile phones. Social networking sites such as Friendster, Facebook, Multiply and Twitter are also able to push content into mobile phones.

“For those who are heavily invested with their mobile phones, the results indicate how they have affected the Filipino lifestyle and how businesses can actually penetrate a huge chunk of the population via cell phones and SMS. Those who invest in understanding their consumers are the ones who will thrive in this increasingly competitive environment,’’ Synovate Philippines managing director Carole Sarthou said.

The country currently has more than 35 million mobile subscribers.

Watch Hook City Roy Jones Jr. vs. Jeff Lacy Live Online. On Saturday night, August 15, 2009 in Biloxi, Mississippi, Jones will likely have to rely on that heart and toughness when he faces former super middleweight champ Jeff Lacy. Lacy a 32 tears old, remains a tough, durable fighter but can be outboxed, as he was nearly shut out by Joe Calzaghe and Jermain Taylor in the two biggest fights of his career.

Watch Jones vs Lacy Live on Saturday August 15, 2009 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS.

Former Eight-Time World Champion Roy "Captain Hook" Jones Jr. (53-5) takes on Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy (35-2) for a scheduled 12 rounds at Light Heavyweight. Roy Jones Jr. once the baddest man in boxing is no longer that super hero. Since 2004 he has gone 3-4 and like Lacy isn’t the same boxer. Jones Jr is now 40 years old ,but cannot be counted out. Lacy started his career off with 21 straight victories then in 2006 went over to England to pick up number 22. But things went terrible wrong when he met Joe Calzaghe and took the beaten of his life. Since then he has only lost once to Jermain Taylor, but hasn’t looked the same. Expect to see a great fight as both fighters look to leave it all in the ring come Saturday night.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2009

Earth is entering a stream of dusty debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle on July 31, 2009, the source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Although the shower won't peak until August 11th and 12th, the show is already getting underway.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.

In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but late Tuesday night and also Wednesday night could prove fruitful, weather permitting.

The Perseids are bits of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has laid down several streams of debris, each in a slightly different location, over the centuries as it orbits the sun. Every August, Earth passes through these debris streams, which spread out over time.

Astronomers expect up to 200 meteors per hour in short bursts of up to 15 minutes or so. But many of the fainter meteors will simply not be visible due to moonlight, and rates will go down even more for those in urban areas. More likely a typical observer under reasonably dark skies might hope to see a meteor every couple minutes when the bursts come, and fewer during lulls.

The best time to watch is between midnight and dawn Wednesday. Forecasters say the best stretch could come between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. ET (1-2 a.m. PT), which would be after daybreak in Europe. Some Perseids might be visible late Tuesday night, and Wednesday night into Thursday morning could prove worthwhile, too.

Meteor forecasting is still in its infancy, however, so the best bet for anyone truly hungry to spot shooting stars is to get in as much observing time as possible from around 11 p.m. Tuesday night until dawn Wednesday, and if you miss that show, try the same time frame Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

500 Peso bill design with couple Cory and Ninoy

On Monday the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said they are now studying the possible design of a new P500 bill that would feature the late former president Corazon Aquino alongside her husband, the late former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

For a person to have his or her image printed on a bill, the person should already be dead, has made a significant contribution to the country, and should embody something unique about the Filipino people.

The BSP Numismatic and Concept Committee said Mrs. Aquino is already qualified to have her image put in a bill or coin.

"To recognize the contributions of President Aquino to the cause of democracy, to the cause of national unity, how do we do that? We intend to put her portrait in the P500 notes," BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Gunigundo said.

The BSP expects to have the lay-out ready by October, and once approved, the first batch of bills with Cory and Ninoy's images will be out early 2010.

Along with this possible new design, the BSP is preparing to include new technologies on the current bills to heighten security and to prevent fraud.

This idea first came out after a possible design of a new P500 bill, made by 22-year-old Reno Naval, came out on the internet.

500 Peso bill design with couple Cory and Ninoy(unofficial design)

"I posted [the design] as my first post on my website (www.peaceloveandrevolution.com). And then surprisingly, there were a lot of people who saw it, and when the website was [published] on [the newspapers], it spread out like wildfire," Naval said about the spread of his design on the internet.

Watch UFC 101 Declaration Online Video Preview:

On August 8th, and if his first 205-pound bout – a 61 second knockout of James Irvin last July – is any indication, the big boys had better watch out for this lethal “Spider”. As BJ Penn defends his UFC lightweight crown for the second time against number one contender Kenny Florian.

The winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter and a man credited by many as one of the reasons for the explosion of MMA in the United States following that TUF finale bout in 2005, Forrest Griffin (16-5) isn’t a fighter who will take credit for such achievements – he just wants to fight, and with UFC wins over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua under his belt, the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has more than proved himself in the Octagon. On August 8th, the 30-year old Griffin looks to fight his way back into the title picture after his loss to Rashad Evans last December, and there’s no better way for him to do that than by handing Anderson Silva his first UFC loss.

Former President Corazon Aquino Died As a Legend of Democracy

Former President Corazon Aquino Died As a Legend of Democracy
Former President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator with a "people power" revolt and then sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76.

The uprising she led in 1986 ended the repressive 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe, including those that ended Communist rule in eastern Europe.

But she struggled in office to meet high public expectations. Her land redistribution program fell short of ending economic domination by the landed elite, including her own family. Her leadership, especially in social and economic reform, was often indecisive, leaving many of her closest allies disillusioned by the end of her term.

Aquino was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year and confined to a Manila hospital for more than a month. Her son said the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue her chemotherapy.

Supporters have been holding daily prayers for Aquino in churches in Manila and throughout the country for a month. Masses were scheduled for later Saturday, and yellow ribbons were tied on trees around her neighborhood in Quezon city.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who is on an official visit to the United States, said in a statement that "the entire nation is mourning" Aquino's demise. Arroyo declared a period of national mourning and announced a state funeral would be held for the late president.

TV stations on Saturday were running footage of Aquino's years together with prayers while her former aides and supporters offered condolences.
