The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ awakes in Asia

It started in Egypt, then caused a stir in Britain. Now, “The Mummy” lands in Asia to create more ruckus, chaos and action.

In the third installment of “The Mummy” adventure franchise series, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” sees Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) returning with his son Alex (Luke Ford) to combat the resurrected Emperor Han (Jet Li).

Set in the catacombs of ancient China then moving to the neon-lit streets of post-war Shanghai and then high into the Himalayas, this film revolves around the O’Connells battling their way left and right to save the world after Rick’s son Alex is tricked into awakening the Chinese ruler from eternal slumber.

Joined by his mother Evelyn (Mario Bello) and uncle Jonathan (John Hannah), the O’Connells are doomed by sorceress Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation while they fight China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors known as the silent terra cotta army.

Unless the O’Connell family can stop the evil wrath of the Emperor Mummy, a peaceful world would cease to exist.

The amazing cultural fusion of the cast includes new characters. These include Ming Guo, sorceress Zi Yuan’s love interest and the Emperor’s loyal servant played by Russell Wong; Maguire, Rick O’Connell's old friend and pilot played by Liam Cunningham; and Lin, the Emperor’s ageless tomb guardian played by Isabella Leong.

Universal Pictures’ “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is distributed internationally by United International Pictures and in the Philippines by Solar Entertainment Corporation.

Kadayawan 2008 Festival

Kadayawan Festival

The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw", from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw", meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, with a number of spin-off festivals in the region. The festival honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as its representatives parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city. A celebration that interfaces the three aspects; tribal, industrial and arts and entertainment. The festivities are be highlighted by floral floats, street-dancing competitions and exhibits showcasing the island's tourism products and services.

This year’s celebration has two main components:

Lumadnong Kasaulogan (Indigenous Peoples Festival) - the core of the Kadayawan Festival showcasing our indigenous peoples’ culture and arts.

Subay sa Lumadnong Kagikan (Contemporary Indigenous-motivated Celebrations) - showcases the impact of the indigenous culture and traditions to contemporary artists and communities.

This year is theme: "Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan!" (“Flourishing Indigenous Heritage, Protecting Ancestral Nations”)

Standing ovation in historic concert

Standing ovation for Lea Salonga in historic concert.

She has long made her mark as an international artist. Still, it was as if she had captivated a whole new world.

Lea Salonga’s milestone performance draws thunderous applause
Lea Salonga earned a standing ovation at the end of her historic concert on Friday evening at Los Angeles’ iconic architectural landmark and world-class performing arts venue, the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

A sold-out crowd cheered Salonga as she became the first Filipino performer to have a solo show at architect Frank Gehry’s billowing steel-clad masterpiece.

Through Salonga’s crystal-clear voice, Filipino lyrics of such OPM standards like “Hahanapin Ko” by Jimmy Santiago (music by Jose Mari Chan); “Sana Maulit Muli” by Gary and Angeli Valenciano; and “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” by Alex Malilin reverberated inside the beautiful wood-paneled hall.

The normally staid venue—home of the world-renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra—came to life as the mostly Filipino audience, encouraged by Salonga, sang along to the Filipino songs.

Salonga’s rendition of songs that have distinguished her multi-awarded career, including “Reflection,” “I’d Give My Life For You,” “On My Own” and “I Dreamed a Dream,” earned thunderous applause.

A volunteer from the audience, who identified himself as Cliff, received the evening’s first standing ovation. The American, randomly picked by Salonga from the audience, was surprisingly good in singing with the singer her popular duet, “A Whole New World,” the Oscar-nominated theme song from Disney’s animated hit, “Aladdin.”

Backed by an orchestra of 19 musicians, Salonga also made the crowd swoon with her versions of “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Taylor the Latte Boy,” “Imagine” and “Everybody Says Don’t.”

As a preview of her coming show “Cinderella,” which opens at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on July 29, Salonga delivered a spirited performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “There’s Music in You.”

Pinoy won 3rd Place in Math Olympiad

Pinoy student is Math Olympiad 3rd Placer

A Philippine Science High School scholar bagged the bronze medal at the 20th Asian Pacific Math Olympiad (APMO) held at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.

Tobit James Narciso, a graduate of the PSHS Diliman Campus, won third place after garnering nine points out of a possible 35 points.

A student is awarded a bronze medal once he or she garners more than seven points, a silver medal for scores above 12 points and a gold medal for scores higher than 17 points. Total number of points is 35.

SEI said this year’s APMO appeared to be difficult with very low medal turnout - 17 for gold, 12 for silver, and seven for bronze, with one bronze going to the Philippines.

Overall, the Philippines ranked 17th among 28 participating countries, garnering a total score of 42, bagging only one bronze medal. It bested neighbor countries Indonesia, Cambodia and Bangladesh, the SEI said.

South Korea topped the winners, followed by Japan, United States, Taiwan and Russia.

Dr. Ester Ogena, SEI director, cited Narciso’s accomplishment as she challenged other high school students “to step up for the country by excelling in mathematics.”

Ogena said excellence in mathematics, as well as in science, should translate into careers in science, technology and engineering that could help catapult the Philippines to becoming a developed country.

Narciso bested nine other Filipino high school students.

Launched in 1989, the APMO aims “to discover, encourage and challenge mathematically-gifted school students in all Pacific Rim countries.”
