Worst calamity in Iloilo



   


Typhoon Frank devastated Iloilo.


The worst calamity that hit Iloilo last weekends, Saturday, June 21, 2008. As Typhoon Frank with international codename Fengshen devastated Iloilo province together the unexpected flash flood. Which hit the almost the whole city of Iloilo. Even Secretary Raul Gonzales Sr. (Secretary of Justice) house was not able to survive the unexpected flash flood. "Since birth I did not experience this kind of flood", he said on a radio interview here in Iloilo.

Typhoon Frank mark the history of Iloilo as he leaves 135 fatalities in Iloilo province alone which had the most numbered among in the provinces in the region but the death toll is still rising. With 219 were still missing.

According to National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) the damage to agriculture and fisheries at P3.3 billion, infrastructure at P750 million, schools at P212 million, and fishing boats at P110 million.The damage to infrastructure and food production would hardly have an impact on rice supply or the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the province.

The National Power Corporation was forced to shut down its power plant which cause for the blackout in the province. But as of Tuesday, June 24, 2008, about 50 percent of Panay Island in Western Visayas have yet restored the electricity. Other parts of Iloilo Province still remains in darkness.
